Carbon pools

The environment is never really at equilibrium; it gets near, overshoots then overcompensates. That's just the nature of the cycle it runs in. The fluctuations of carbon in a particular pool, be it the atmosphere, the soil or the oceans are simply in balance with themselves. A little movement from one to another doesn't shift the system much and it finds itself approaching the equilibrium again.
